However, my winter escape to Australia made a lasting impression on me and a little extra downtime seems the perfect excuse to relive my adventures. A la pied, wheels or fins, these are the unforgettable ways to explore one of the world’s most captivating countries.</p>
<h2><strong>Hike</strong></h2>
<p>To me, exercising on holiday means maximising my time outdoors and using nature as a fitness playground. I was lucky enough to do two of Australia’s most iconic walks: the coastal hike from Bondi to Coogee and the steep ascent up to Passage Peak on Hamilton Island. The unspoiled beaches of Queensland also proved a stunning place to explore, and my husband and I walked hand in hand for miles without meeting a single person (or giant unsightly spider, much to my relief).</p>

<h2><strong>Run</strong></h2>
<p>You all know I can’t resist picking up the pace every one in a while, so Sydney’s Botanical Gardens proved the perfect place for an early morning workout. With jet lag on our side, and the company of numerous super fit locals, my husband Ben and I almost justified our ample holiday indulgences. Which brings me onto the next means of discovery…</p>
<figure id="attachment_1570" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1570" style="width: 900px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Run-Australia.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-1570" src="https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Run-Australia.jpg" alt="Sydney Botanical Gardens " width="900" height="500" srcset="https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Run-Australia.jpg 900w, https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Run-Australia-600x333.jpg 600w, https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Run-Australia-300x167.jpg 300w, https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Run-Australia-150x83.jpg 150w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1570" class="wp-caption-text">Interval training is implied when these views demand a stop-start kind of run</figcaption></figure>
<h2><strong>Eat </strong></h2>
<p>Undisputedly the culinary capital of Australia, Sydney has a mouth-watering selection of restaurants to choose from. As experts in Asian fusion cuisine, I was charmed by both the service and the delicious tasting menu at <a href="http://billykwong.com.au" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Billy Kwong</strong></span></a> in Potts Point (which also happens to be excellent value for money). Pictured below is the fresh and immaculately prepared sushi at <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong><a href="http://www.toko-sydney.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Toko</a></strong></span> in Surry Hills. I also joined the Manly surf crowd in my adoration over local favourite Pure Wholefoods, which has the most extensive menu of raw, organic and wholefood meals I’ve seen in all my travels. For healthy cooking inspiration, this is one place you simply can’t miss.</p>
<figure id="attachment_1562" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1562" style="width: 900px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Eat-Australia.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-1562" src="https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Eat-Australia.jpg" alt="Toko Sydney" width="900" height="500" srcset="https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Eat-Australia.jpg 900w, https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Eat-Australia-600x333.jpg 600w, https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Eat-Australia-300x167.jpg 300w, https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Eat-Australia-150x83.jpg 150w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1562" class="wp-caption-text">Watching the Toko sushi chef at work, and appreciating every bite full</figcaption></figure>
<figure id="attachment_1571" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1571" style="width: 900px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Eat-Manly.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-1571" src="https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Eat-Manly.jpg" alt="Pure Wholefoods Manly" width="900" height="500" srcset="https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Eat-Manly.jpg 900w, https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Eat-Manly-600x333.jpg 600w, https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Eat-Manly-300x167.jpg 300w, https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Eat-Manly-150x83.jpg 150w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1571" class="wp-caption-text">Kale &amp; quinoa cakes, superfood salads or homemade spinach wraps?</figcaption></figure>
<h2><strong>Buggy</strong></h2>
<p>When it’s time to give your feet a rest, Hamilton Island presents my favourite alternative: high-power golf buggies. Cars are strictly banned from this Whitsundays Island. Instead, tourists can hire buggies to explore the island, while locals personalise their buggies to stand out in the busy parking lanes. As you can see, I was quick to peg my favourite of the lot.</p>
<figure id="attachment_1561" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1561" style="width: 900px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Buggy-Australia.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-1561" src="https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Buggy-Australia.jpg" alt="Hamilton Island Buggy" width="900" height="500" srcset="https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Buggy-Australia.jpg 900w, https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Buggy-Australia-600x333.jpg 600w, https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Buggy-Australia-300x167.jpg 300w, https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Buggy-Australia-150x83.jpg 150w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1561" class="wp-caption-text">Windows down? <figure id="attachment_1580" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1580" style="width: 900px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Buggy-Love.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-1580" src="https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Buggy-Love.jpg" alt="Hamilton Island Buggy" width="900" height="500" srcset="https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Buggy-Love.jpg 900w, https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Buggy-Love-600x333.jpg 600w, https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Buggy-Love-300x167.jpg 300w, https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Buggy-Love-150x83.jpg 150w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1580" class="wp-caption-text">Feeling the buggy love</figcaption></figure>
<h2><strong>Boat </strong></h2>
<p>A trip to Australia isn’t complete without some time on the water. We took the fast boat from Sydney’s ferry terminal to Manly, and I loved pretending to be a local and joining in on what must be the coolest commute around the globe. With glorious beach, beautiful boutiques and enticing cafes at every turn, I can see why Manly is a popular place to live. It’s said to be the home of Australian surfing, and sharks or not (ideally not) I’d happily convert to a surf chick if it meant I could hang in Manly just a little longer.</p>
<p>Another necessary boat trip is to Whitehaven Beach in the Whitsundays – the iconic beach with the world’s whitest, softest sand. It was stingray season, but I couldn’t resist a little dip in the water. Check out my <a href="https://www.instagram.com/fitbritcollective/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Instagram feed</strong></span></a> for some more snaps of the beach itself.</p>
<figure id="attachment_1560" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1560" style="width: 900px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Boat-Australia.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-1560 size-full" src="https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Boat-Australia.jpg" alt="Whitehaven Beach Australia" width="900" height="500" srcset="https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Boat-Australia.jpg 900w, https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Boat-Australia-600x333.jpg 600w, https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Boat-Australia-300x167.jpg 300w, https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Boat-Australia-150x83.jpg 150w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1560" class="wp-caption-text">With soft sand and azure water, Whitehaven lives up to big expectations. Wearing: Triangl Winnie Bikini</figcaption></figure>
<p>From either the Whitsundays or further north in Port Douglas, you can get a boat trip out to the Great Barrier Reef. We went on a dedicated snorkeling trip with <a href="http://www.wavelength.com.au" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Wavelength Tours</strong></span></a> and I can’t recommend them enough – small groups, incredible snorkeling sites and super informative marine biologists on board. I’ve snorkeled and dived in a lot of destinations, but nothing will beat a face full of colourful fish and a (friendly) 15 minute encounter with a reef shark.</p>
<figure id="attachment_1559" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1559" style="width: 900px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Boat-Australia-Queensland.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-1559" src="https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Boat-Australia-Queensland.jpg" alt="Great Barrier Reef Queensland" width="900" height="500" srcset="https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Boat-Australia-Queensland.jpg 900w, https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Boat-Australia-Queensland-600x333.jpg 600w, https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Boat-Australia-Queensland-300x167.jpg 300w, https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Boat-Australia-Queensland-150x83.jpg 150w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1559" class="wp-caption-text">Beautiful coral gardens and colourful fish for infinity</figcaption></figure>
<h2><strong>Swim</strong></h2>
<p>As swimming in the sea presents a few difficulties in Australia (you wear stingray suits snorkeling, but this isn’t the most comfortable if you’re after just a quick dip), there is a rather innovative alternative that beats a chlorinated swimming pool any day. All across the Australia coast, and famously around Sydney, there are natural pools that contain real ocean water without any of the ocean threats. <a href="http://icebergs.com.au" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Bondi Icebergs</strong></span></a> is the most famous (note you can also practice yoga there with <a href="http://www.yogabythesea.com.au" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Yoga By The Sea</strong></span></a>), but I also fell in love with some beautiful spots for swimming lanes along the walk from Bondi to Coogee.</p>
<figure id="attachment_1581" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1581" style="width: 900px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Yoga-By-The-Sea.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-1581" src="https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Yoga-By-The-Sea.jpg" alt="Bondi Icebergs Sydney" width="900" height="500" srcset="https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Yoga-By-The-Sea.jpg 900w, https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Yoga-By-The-Sea-600x333.jpg 600w, https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Yoga-By-The-Sea-300x167.jpg 300w, https://fitbritcollective.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Yoga-By-The-Sea-150x83.jpg 150w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1581" class="wp-caption-text">A moment of zen amidst crashing waters</figcaption></figure>

<p>Like many of winter&#8217;s victims, I started the New Year with a terrible bout of flu. It knocked me for nine and certainly ruled out an early start on any fitness-related resolutions. But as all ailments and pains do, the symptoms passed after a few days and I&#8217;m already steadily regaining my pre-Christmas strength. Although I hated not being able to exercise at the time, my body is healthier for the much-needed rest and I&#8217;m able to work much harder now than I might be if I&#8217;d put extra stress on my system and prolonged the illness.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s important to remember that your body is a simple system of input and output. We only produce so much energy to distribute for different functions. There are the basic everyday processes like circulating blood and oxygen around the body, regenerating cells, sending primary nervous signals from the brain and eliminating toxins. If, on top of this, your immune system is fighting off an infection or your body is attempting to heal from an injury, much of its energy will be redirected for those purposes. As a result, there is less capacity left over to fuel high-intensity demands like exercise. Your body will rise to the demand, but only at the sacrifice of other restorative functions essential for your wellbeing. By forcing yourself to do a round of burpees, you may be putting your body at cross purposes with itself and actively preventing recovery.</p>
<p>Any number of things can disrupt your training &#8211; illness, injury, period pain, feelings of extreme stress or depression, and of course those logistical things like simply having too much to do. In the face of all today&#8217;s pressures (including the expectations we have of ourselves), I wanted to compile a definitive guide for when to push through the pain and when to pull back. I hope this helps you put your training in perspective and appreciate your body for all the wonderful things it can do.</p>

<td class="column-1">Reason</td><td class="column-2">Gentle exercise can help to clear the cobwebs and loosen any phlegm you need to get our of your system. But you should still reserve some energy to support your immune system; don't push your body as hard as you would when you feel healthy. </td><td class="column-3">Your immune system is firing on all cylinders and you should do everything you can to support it. A gentle stretch may revive your senses, but anything more intensive is likely to be counterproductive to your recovery. </td><td class="column-4">Go easy on your joints and steer clear of any exercise likely to tear down any already strained muscle fibres. Your body is working hard to rebuild your muscles, and what you do during rest days is every bit as important as what you do during workouts. Flush out lactic acid with gentle cardio, and refuel with lots of protein and vitamins. </td><td class="column-5">Intense pain can be a sign of serious damage and you must be careful not to further aggravate the problem area. At the same time, complete inactivity can cause further stiffness and discomfort. Never push your body to do exercises that feel unpleasant, unless a physio has specifically recommended them. </td><td class="column-6">A bit of fresh air can often help to relieve some of the symptoms associated with that time of the month. You probably won't feel like pulling on your lycra and picking up any serious pace, but I personally prefer to take on a short run or skipping session in a pair of forgiving sweats than to curl up on my sofa and dwell on the pain. </td><td class="column-7">If you have a big work or personal problem on your mind, I always recommend commiting to short, intense training sessions. Working extra hard allows you to cut down on total workout time, and interval-based exercise helps release happiness hormones like epinephrine to make you feel more positive and productive. Keep workouts to 45min or less. </td>
